I had the honor of studying under renowned book artist, Julie Chen, while I was a work-study student at Penland School of Craft in North Carolina. I, of course, cannot be in a place as magical as Penland and not make an Endemic Shrine of some sort. Below my work of two weeks: a pop-up shrine! The surface design of the paper was made by me using the pochoir technique (a fancy word for stenciling).
When creating the shrine I really stayed true to the experience I was having at the time. I was very inspired by the topography and walls of rhododendron growing practically vertical on the mountain sides, the mason work of the campus and the insects and moths that were attracted to the studio lights at night.
